it's me! I'm so glad we're catching up.

it's me! I'm so glad we're catching up.
My desk these days

I know. It's been awhile. You practically forgot I had a newsletter. And this is coming from a whole new platform (it's bloggy! You can leave comments! You can share the posts with other people! It's like a Substack but without the N@z! problem! I think. I hope.)

But I am here. Again. Once more. Fifteen months after my last newsletter. (I didn't realize it'd been so long.)

I've writing, and writing, and writing some more, and I want to talk about it. I've been having many many thoughts about reading and writing in the current times (and recent times) on a personal level, that I'm hoping/suspecting many of you relate to. I wanted to share them but my previous newsletter service was not fitting what I was looking for. I wanted a platform where people could comment, read it as a blog, or read it as a newsletter in their email. Whatever works for you.

But not Substack. On account of the N&zi problem. No shade on people using the platform--it really is very good at what it does, as a platform, and it took me a long time to find an alternative.

So that's why we're on Ghost now.

And I'm going to be writing a newsletter (post?) at least every other Friday, but also possibly more frequently.

I've got one on why I write historical...fiction? fantasy? fiction with a fantastical bent? Fabulism? Fableism? Alternative History? It's on what I call what I write, and why I call it that, and how I see genre right now, both as a writer, and as an author (and how those things are different.)

I've got another one on how I'm rebuilding my own reading stamina, after realizing what the last six years or so has done to my reading capabilities. I hope I'm not alone. I'm probably not? Hopefully.

I've got another one on my current 100 day challenges I set for myself and what I'm learning along the way about how I work, what motivates me, what is creatively satisfying, and what I'm taking away from these after they're over.

I'm also going to be talking about the long, hard, wandering road to my Fall 2027 book. Sharing some book covers. Sharing information about my upcoming self-published books. And a weird, niche special-interest project I'm launching this winter.

So I hope you'll stay.

But I also understand if you're like more emails? I forgot who you were? I'm not sure why I signed up here in the first place? I can't imagine receiving more emails than I currently receive. I used to be an inbox zero person. Not these days!

So if you want to unsubscribe, I get it. No hard feelings.

You can also obviously try and if you don't like it, that's also okay! There's always an unsubscribe link because I believe in that and also the law believes in that ;)

And of course, I want you to stay. If you want to stay, I hope you love the things to come. I've missed long form writing like a blog, and I have many thoughts that don't fit on Instagram--and the idea of posting them on Threads or Bluesky exhausts me preemptively. So I'm really excited for this new newsletter era.

Before I go, I wanted to share two book recommendations.

Friends, I don't know if you know this, but Suzanne Collins can really write. I recently finished SUNRISE ON THE REAPING (my sister wants to see the movie when it comes out in November and I'm not seeing the movie before I read the book.) SO good.

And last night I finished EVERY DAY I'M READING: 53 Ways to Get Closer to Books by Hwang Bo-Reum. It's a bunch of short short chapters on different ways to think about reading, why we read, what kinds of books to read, how to approach reading and books if you don't consider yourself a reader or you're trying to be a better reader, etc. I'm going to be talking more about this in the future but just wanted to share that I give this a solid 5 stars. I really enjoyed it.

See you next week so we can talk about ~ genre ~ and how I talk about what I write, and what it's like and what I consider about writing between genres and across genres.
